About the program
The program was developed in 2011 and was updated in 2022. The program is updated at the beginning of each academic year for further improvement of the learning process.
The Master's program "Comparative Literary Studies" offers students to study literature as one of the main mediums of representation of cultural and value systems and to observe literature in both national and broad intercultural and global/transcultural contexts, which, on the one hand, helps to understand a foreign culture, and on the other hand, it is a prerequisite for understanding their own culture in the world cultural context.
Program Aims
Within the program, students will:
- get acquainted with the approaches and methods of comparative literary studies and will be able to use them to research current issues and problems of the field in an interdisciplinary and intercultural perspective;
- deepen their knowledge of important historical stages and recent trends of world literature and understand their relation to socio-political contexts and philosophical-worldview paradigms;
- explore thematic, imagological, structural, epochal, genre and aesthetic aspects of Georgian literature in relation to the trends of world literature;
- improve academic communication skills by creating and presenting a research paper to the scientific community.
Major Fields of Study
The program of Comparative Literary Studies covers literary theory, Literary analysis and history of literature.
Learning Outcomes and Competencies (General and Field Specific)
A graduate:
- describes and conveys the main theoretical models and concepts of general and comparative literary studies and uses them for the comparative analysis of literary texts;
- characterizes in detail the important historical stages of new and recent Western literature and relates the literary work to the relevant historical, social, cultural, political and philosophical-worldview contexts;
- independently conducts research on the thematic, imagological, structural, genre and aesthetic aspects of Georgian literature in relation to world literary trends;
- critically reads a literary text, identifies the ethical issues raised in it, and presents the results of his/her research and original interpretation of the text to the wider academic community in writing and orally.

Structure of the Program
To obtain the academic degree of Master in Comparative Literary Studies, the student must accumulate 120 credits, according to the following scheme:
Structure of the program:
- Compulsory courses - 36 credits;
- Compulsory-elective courses - 42 credits;
- Elective courses - no more than 18 credits;
- Master’s thesis - 24 credits.
