About the program

The program was developed in 2022. The program is updated at the beginning of each academic year for further improvement of the learning process.

Program Aims

The goal of the master's program is to train a lexicographer based on international experience, who will be able to independently explore the meaning of a word; search for the data needed to create a dictionary word-article, process and transform it into a dictionary word-article using modern methods and technologies, using field knowledge and skills; will be able to independently carry out research in various directions of theoretical lexicography to effectively solve the current tasks of Georgian lexicography and will be a competitive personal in professional activities.

The program and the academic staff participating in it actively cooperate with the international consortium of "European Master in Lexicography" (EMLEX, European Master in Lexicography) (https://www.emlex.phil.fau.eu).

Major Fields of Study

The program covers lexicography, linguistics, working on dictionaries.

Learning Outcomes and Competencies (General and Field Specific)

The Graduate

  1. demonstrates systematic linguistic knowledge of lexicological and lexicographical theories and research methods;
  2. is able to identify current issues in the lexicological and lexicographic field as well as modern relevant research methods and approaches to their solution;
  3. can use modern technological tools (text corpus, dictionary management systems, software tools for automatic and semi-automatic processing of data, etc.);
  4. can work on bilingual, explanatory/defining, and terminological dictionaries, as well as on parallel and monolingual electronic corpora following international linguistic, lexicographic, and technological standards;
  5. can combine classical lexicographical methods and modern computer technologies to solve lexicographical as well as text corpus-related tasks;
  6. can communicate effectively orally and in writing with the academic and professional community using modern communication technologies and adhering to the principles of academic integrity;
  7. can assess his own and others' attitudes to values, and in this regard, contribute to the establishment of new values;
  8. can effectively evaluate and monitor their learning process or professional activity for professional development, determine learning needs, and take care of continuous professional development.

Depending on the specifics of the learning components, other teaching methods can be used during the program's implementation, which is presented in the syllabi of certain courses.

Career Opportunities

The graduates of the program can be employed:

  • in scientific centers or institutions of lexicographical profile;
  • in the public and private sectors, where there is a need for terminological and translation work;
  •  in the fields of printed and electronic publishing;
  • in the field of print and electronic journalism;
  • in educational institutions.

In addition, the program graduate can continue his studies at the doctoral level.

Structure of the Program

To obtain the academic degree of  Master of Lexicography, the student must accumulate 120 credits, according to the following scheme:

Structure of the program:

  1. Compulsory courses -  54 credits;
  2. Elective courses -  36 credits;
  3. Master’s thesis - 30 credits.
