About the Program
The program was developed in 2011 and re-accredited in 2022. It can be updated at the beginning of each academic year for further improvement and development. The MA program in Archaeology allows students to gain knowledge about Georgian archaeology (i.e. archaeology of Georgia from ancient to the Middle Ages), world archaeology as well as modern archaeological research methodology and current processes; the relationship between the dynamics of certain archaeological periods in Georgia and adjacent fields (natural sciences); conducting interdisciplinary studies as well as planning and implementing effective field-archeological works in Georgia and overall Caucasus region.
Aims of the Program
The program aims to prepare a competitive specialist in the field of archaeology who has/can:
- complex theoretical knowledge of the archaeology of the Caucasus region;
- define an original research question related to the past of the Caucasus region, independently carry out archaeological research and share its results;
- work in the field as well as in the laboratory, collect, analyze and interpret archaeological material;
- adhere to the principles of professional and research ethics.
Major Fields of Study
MA program in Archaeology covers archaeology of the Caucasus region as well as compulsory field practice.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, the graduate is able to:
- demonstrate systematic knowledge of the dynamics of modern and ancient world archaeology development (prehistoric and historic eras) and trends;
- determine how the current cultural-historical processes in the Caucasus affect the archaeological monuments of the outside world and material culture in general;
- demonstrate in-depth knowledge and comprehension of the current challenges, problems and ways to solve them;
- independently plan and carry out archaeological research work in all conditions (field, laboratory, chamber), in order to expand the existing knowledge about the past of the Caucasus region or to interpret it in a new way; in doing so, he/she can use modern methods of obtaining and studying archaeological material (GIS, ArcMap);
- interpret material culture remains/materials obtained by archaeological methods, considering the historical, social, cultural and political context;
- carry out research activities in accordance with established norms of archaeological ethics and legal regulations;
- present his/her own research results/findings in writing and orally to the academic and general public, clearly and professionally, adhering to the principles of academic integrity and communication standards;
- act autonomously in the learning and research process and demonstrate his/her own scientific vision and attitude.
Learning Methods
Lecture, seminar, individual and group projects, analysis and synthesis, practical method (field and lab work), discussion / debate, demonstration method, working on primary sources (written and non-written); elements of e-learning, brainstorming, group work.
