About the program
The program was developed in 2012 and was updated in 2022. The program is updated at the beginning of each academic year for further improvement of the learning process.
Within the Applied Linguistics program, the student will get comprehensive knowledge of the issues of the language and theoretical linguistics based on their application possibilities; and will develop the ability to analyze and evaluate textual representation, as well as qualitative, statistical and computer processing of linguistic studies.
Program Aims
The Master's program in Applied Linguistics aims to train a highly qualified linguist who will contribute to the development of field knowledge and professional practice and develop the student's deep and systematic knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of applied linguistics; will study the issues of phonetics, morphology and syntax in terms of language typology and universals; The program will enable students to develop skills for computer processing of analytical material as well as respect for the state language and linguistic and cultural diversity; students will learn how to share their own opinions and ideas under academic standards.
Major Fields of Study
The program covers general linguistic issues such as pragmatics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and the grammatical analysis of the Megrelian, Laz and Svan Languages as well as Applied Linguistics which includes computational linguistics and language technologies.
Learning Outcomes and Competencies (General and Field Specific)
A graduate:
- demonstrates deep and systematic knowledge of applied linguistics and considers its theoretical foundations and applied potential;
- analyzes and conveys the phonetics, morphology and syntax of Georgian and other languages in terms of language typology and linguistic universals;
- examines various aspects of linguistic research, including language variation, language change in synchronic and diachronic terms, taking into account different approaches;
- defines and practically uses the field and other methods of collection and processing of analytical material in a complex way;
- creates an original, proper and logically reasoned master's thesis, in accordance with existing academic standards and presents it to specialists and/or non-specialists in the field;
- purposefully uses information and communication technologies, library and electronic resources; works individually and as a team in various educational, business and research environments, including within defined deadlines and in an intensive mode;
- respects Georgian as the state language and minority languages; is tolerant of linguistic and cultural diversity.
Instruction Methods
Lecture, Seminar, Analysis and Synthesis, Electronic and hybrid learning elements, Demonstration method, Practical method, Discussions/Debates, Brainstorming, Group work, Case study, Cooperative learning, Induction/deduction, Supervision, Reflection, etc.
Depending on the specifics of the learning components, other teaching methods can be used during the implementation of the program, which is presented in the syllabi of certain courses.

Structure of the Program
To obtain the academic degree of MA in Linguistics, the student must accumulate 120 credits, according to the following scheme:
Structure of the program:
- Compulsory courses - 30 credits;
- Compulsory-elective courses - 48 credits;
- Elective courses - no more than 12 credits;
- Master’s thesis - 30 credits.
