School of Natural Sciences and Medicine ILIA STATE UNIVERSITY

PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY

Physics and Astronomy

Type of university exam: oral exam

Academic degree to be awarded: The Degree of Master of Physics

Brief description:

The program aims to train a new generation of researchers with a profound and systematic knowledge of current issues, modern approaches and methods in physics and/or astronomy, who specialize in one of the areas offered by the program (Elementary Particle Physics, Theoretical Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravitation, Condensed Matter Physics, Astronomy-Astrophysics, Physics of Atmosphere and Ionosphere, Biophysics) and can independently conduct research in the chosen field, which creates a prerequisite for the graduate to be competitive both in the labor market and at the next stage of studies.

Prerequisites for admission to the program:

Admission to the master's degree is based on the results of the Unified Master's Examinations and intra-university oral exams. Knowledge of physics and mathematics, as well as motivation, communication and argumentative reasoning skills will be assessed in the oral exam. Knowledge of the English language at the B1 level will be tested as well.

The competition will take into account the academic performance of the student at the previous level and, in the case of existence, research and/or work experience.

Applicants to the Master's program must have a Bachelor's or an equivalent academic degree in Physics, Mathematics, Information and Communication Technology, Engineering and the field of engineering work.

Information about the conditions, requirements, assessment components and criteria of the entrance exams is given in detail in the “Program Admission Document” and is published on the website of the university in the “Admission” section.

Areas of employment:

A master of physics can continue his/her studies at the next stage of higher education - doctoral studies and/or get employed at a university or scientific-research institutions both in Georgia and abroad, in educational profile institutions.

Employment opportunities according to different educational directions:

  • Graduates of the Astronomy-Astrophysics, Physics of the Atmosphere and Ionosphere concentration: astronomical observatories, scientific and research institutions related to astrophysics and astronomy (see www.aas.org). Public and private structures (where statistics, data analysis and modeling are required).
  • Graduates of the Physics of the Atmosphere and Ionosphere concentration: scientific-research institutions and observatories studying the atmosphere-ionosphere, regional and global climate change monitoring centers, air navigation, hydrometeorology centers.
  • Graduates of the Elementary Particle Physics, Cosmology and Gravitation, Theoretical Astrophysics concentrations: research and applied sector of information technology and electronics; Organizations where computer processing-modeling and statistical analysis of information (data) is required, other fields of physics as well as other fields of physics.
  • Graduates of the Condensed Matter Physics concentration: scientific-research and training institutions working in physics and related fields, high-tech profile materials science, nanoelectronics and nanoengineering research laboratories and industry; Structures engaged in patent activities in the nanotechnological direction; Laboratories and commercial structures working on both theoretical and IT-engineering issues of computing systems.
  • Graduates of the Biophysics concentration: scientific institutions of biomedical profile; Clinical-diagnostic centers.

As a result of the acquired skills, the graduate will be able to work effectively in other areas (new technologies, analytical services, etc.).
