About the program

The program aims to give the student a broad knowledge about the stages of development of Georgian and world film and a deep knowledge of the fundamental principles of film theory. The student of the film studies program will get acquainted with the specifics, characteristics, and development trends of modern cinematography. The program will help the student understand the role of film in shaping public awareness and cultural development.

Aim of the program

The aim of the program is:

• To teach the student the history of Georgia and world cinema, its development stages and genres;
• To teach the art of film criticism and to develop the ability to analyze and evaluate film masterpieces, to discuss, comment on and interpret them in a cultural and historical context;
• To develop the student's ability to ask questions and find answers, to teach them to identify the problem about other events, to express their opinion freely and to defend their position, to encourage innovative and creative approaches.

Main areas of study

• The film studies program envisages the study of cinema theory and practice, the history of world cinema, modern cinema, Georgian film (from silent cinema to modern cinema);
• Familiarity with the principles of critical writing, film and theater music, literature and cinema, film drama;
• Knowledge of the specifics of documentary and television cinema, cameraman art, video art, and modern technologies.

Knowledge and understanding

The graduate of Film Studies:

• Will have extensive knowledge about the stages of development of Georgian and world cinema;
• Know the fundamental principles of film theory and the stages of its development;
• Will have extensive knowledge about the specifics, characteristics, and development trends of modern cinema;
• Know the basics of film criticism, its basic approaches, and its modern aspects;
• Will understand the role of film in shaping public awareness and developing culture;
• Will have extensive knowledge of aesthetics and film perception peculiarities.

Application of knowledge in practice

The graduate will be able to:

• Analyze the historical, cultural, philosophical, and social context of cinematography of different countries;
• Analyze current processes and trends in cinema;
• Apply the fundamental principles of film theory in the critical evaluation of a film work;
• Analyze film language and its aesthetic aspects;
• Analyze film form types of different styles and genres.

The graduate of the film studies program may be employed at:

• Public sector, in the Ministry of Culture, Education, National Tourism Administration, their regional and municipal departments;
• Participate in cultural-educational projects;
• Participate in short-term and long-term art projects in the field of cultural heritage protection;
• Non-governmental, private, business sector: publishing houses, editorial offices, art auctions, galleries, museums and film archives, advertising business, mass media and journalism (newspapers, magazines, television, radio, and new business); In cinemas and film production, film studios and film festivals, concert establishments, as well as in the production service.

The program prepares students to continue their studies at the Master’s level.

To receive a bachelor’s degree in film studies, a student must accumulate 240 ECTS.
