About the program

The program was developed in 2011 and was reaccredited in 2023. The program is updated at the beginning of each academic year for further improvement  of  the learning process.

Aim of the program

It aims to prepare a competitive specialist in English philology who:

  • has comprehensive knowledge of English as a means of communication; 
  • is equipped with basic knowledge of the structure of the English language and its systemic features;
  • has a broad knowledge of British and/or American literature, culture and history;
  • is able to not only understand different types of English texts, but also to analyze them linguistically and from literary aspect, taking into account cultural, social and historical contexts.

In addition, the program focuses on the development of such transferable skills as effective oral and written communication in Georgian and English, critical analysis and argumentation and  reasoning.

Study areas

The Bachelor program of Anglistics combines two main areas - Linguistics, which provides an opportunity to study the English language in many aspects (also practical language use), and Literary Studies, which includes important authors, genres and works of English-language literature. 

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the program, the graduate:

  1. demonstrates broad theoretical knowledge of morphology, syntax, vocabulary and stylistics of the English language; 
  2. demonstrates broad knowledge of the foundations and principles of Anglo-American literary studies;
  3. demonstrates general knowledge of the history of British and American literature and thorough knowledge of one and/or some of certain literary periods; 
  4. demonstrates  broad knowledge of the most important events in the culture and history of Great Britain and/or America; 
  5. can critically analyze an English-language text, which involves identifying and interpreting different content layers of the text;
  6. while working on the text, he/she uses the methods and approaches of linguistic analysis and literary studies, and is able to understand and discuss the English-language text considering the different contexts of human activity;
  7. has developed English language competence of at least B2 level;
  8. has the ability to conduct a discussion and provide substantiated reasoning on sectoral issues;
  9. can manage his/her  own study process, search for information and analyze it independently.

Lecture; seminar; analysis/synthesis; practical method; methods/elements of e-learning; demonstration method; discussions/debates; brainstorming; group work.

  • Publishing institutions: editorial offices, publishing houses; 
  • Mass media and journalism: English language newspapers, magazines, television, radio and new media.

A course graduate is entitled to continue studies at the master’s level.

Structure of the program

Structure of the BA program in Anglistics:

  • Free Component: General Module- 60 credits
  • Major Course - 120 Credits
  • Minor program/Free Component- 60 credits

General Module- 60 credits:  

Introduction to Contemporary Thought I, II - 12 credits

Academic Techniques- 6 credits

Statistics - 6 credits

English Courses- 18 credits

Introductory Courses  - 12 credits

Major Course* - 120 Credits:

  • Compulsory courses of the Anglistics program with the code - HUMENGEN - 48 credits
  • Compulsory-elective courses of the Anglistics program with the code - HUMEN – no less than 60 credits, among them: 
    • Practical Language Courses**
    • Literary Studies Courses - min. 12 credits
    • Linguistics Courses - min. 12 credits
    • History and Cultural Courses - min. 6 credits
  • Elective couses*** of Anglistics program with the code- HUMEN – max. 12 credits

 Minor program/Free Component- 60 credits

*In order to choose the main field courses of Anglistics, the student must have passed A2 level;

**If a student needs to complete more than 7 courses/levels within the framework of practical language courses (English language discourse) (of which 3 are included in the general module, and the remaining 4 are included in the main specialization), the rest of the practical language courses will be included as free credits;

***Students can obtain the  12 credits determined for elective courses in full or in part from the block of HUMEN compulsory-elective courses.
