About the program

International Relations - The Europe and Near East Undergraduate Program was developed in 2016 and is updated at the beginning of each academic year to improve the learning process.

The program is focused to prepare a professional, who has a broad knowledge of the basic concepts, theories and research methods of international relations. In addition, the program provides the student with knowledge about current international events and processes in Europe or the Near East.

 Aim of the program

International Relations - Europe and Near East Undergraduate Program aim to equip students with the broad knowledge of:

  • Basic concepts and theories of International Relations;
  • Development history of international relations and basic theoretical and methodological debates;
  • Basic methods of social science research (examination, experiment, content-analysis, test, survey, questionnaire, interview, focus groups)
  • The role of international institutions in world politics, their organizational structure, decision-making mechanisms and objectives;
  • Foreign policy basic theories and approaches;
  • Basic norms of international relations and obstacles and opportunities of the legal regulation of international relations
  • Modern challenges of international and national security
  • Basic concepts, theories and problems of international economic relations
  • Historical, political, economic, social and legal aspects of the processes and events in Europe and Near East regions
  • One of the foreign languages of the region

Besides this, the program develops the skills to use the knowledge in practice, deduction, and communication.

Main areas of the study program

The main area of the program is that the student is able to study and critically understand current issues of modern international politics. In addition, the student realizes the importance of the scientific study of international relations and the interrelationships of the discipline with related fields such as political science, history, economics, and international law.

Knowledge and understanding:

The graduate has a broad knowledge of:

  • Basic concepts and theories of International Relations;
  • Development history of international relations and basic theoretical and methodological debates;

Incorporation of the knowledge into practice:

The graduate can:

  • Study and analyze the behavior of state and non-state actors in international relations using relevant concepts, theories and methods;
  • Investigate and evaluate current issues/issues of modern international politics in accordance with pre-defined guidelines within the framework of the research project;
  • Study and evaluate the current events and processes in Europe or the Near East from the perspective of international relations and related disciplines (politics, economics, law)

Deduction skills:

The graduate can:

  • Formulate reasoned conclusions based on the analysis of current issues in international relations based on reliable and valid sources;
  • Obtain, define and interpret sectoral information under minimal supervision;

Communication skill:

The graduate can:

  • Create an oral and written analytical product on sectoral issues in Georgian and foreign languages;
  • Adherence to academic standards in communication;
  •  Effectively use modern information and communication technologies in communication.

Learning skill:

  • The graduate can assess his/her learning process and define future learning needs.

Structure of the Study Program

To receive the Bachelor’s academic qualification in International Relations, the student must:

  1. General Module of the University Bachelor level – 60 ECTS
  2. From the sectoral module of International Relations:
    • Mandatory courses - 36 ECTS
    • Elective courses- 18 ECTS
  3. Selected concentration (Europe or Near East) of mandatory courses - 30 ECTS
  4. One of the practical courses in foreign languages of the selected concentration – 36 ECTS
  5. Free component or additional specialization – 60 ECTS

If you wish to study at Ilia State University Liberal Arts bachelor program at the Faculty of Science and Art, you need to select Ilia State University Academic Program block (unified admission) wNAEC webpage and pass general national exams.

In the second semester of study at the university, you will have the opportunity to choose between the academic programs provided by the block, and if you wish, you will choose the International Relations - Europe and Near East program.
