About the program
The program was developed in 2011 and was reaccredited in 2023. The program is updated at the beginning of each academic year for further improvement of the learning process.
Aim of the program
Applied German Studies is a new type of educational program, which with its applied focus fully conforms with the current requirements of the Georgian labor market. The aim of the program is to prepare a competitive specialist who can use the German language as well as broad knowledge of German culture, history, political and social structure in sectoral and workplace communication. Within the framework of the program, students will learn not only the German language and its structure, but also get acquainted with modern German-language literature and culture, develop the basic skills of analysis and critical evaluation of German-language texts and their discussion in cultural and historical light as well as commenting, didacticization and interpretation-translation. In addition, students of Applied German Studies will develop intercultural communication skills that will enable them to mediate between German-speaking and Georgian cultures.
They will also be proficient in academic standards, quantitative analysis and teamwork skills.
Also, the program focuses on the development of such transferable skills as effective oral and written communication in Georgian and English, critical analysis, reasoning and argumentation.
Study areas
The Bachelor program of Applied German Studies combines different areas - Linguistics, which provides an opportunity to study the German language in many aspects (also practical language use), and Literary Studies, which includes important authors, genres and works of German-language literature; and also German history and culture.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the program, the graduate can:
- identify and describe the major phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical, stylistic categories of the modern German language;
- name the important and prominent representatives of German literature and convey the plot / theme of their major works;
- connect different types of German-language texts (literary, sectoral, historical...) to the relevant historical and cultural context in order to explain it;
- provide critical analysis and interpretation of various types of German texts;
- use different teaching methods of German language for lesson planning;
- translate various types of German texts of medium difficulty into Georgian adhering to the appropriate stylistic norms and rules;
- use the German language for communication at the B2 level;
- evaluate the place and significance of the German language, German-language literature and culture in the context of European and world cultures;
- lead a discussion and provide reasoned argumentation on various educational issues using information and communication technologies;
- manage his/her own learning process, search for information and analyze it independently.

- Academic Techniques- 6 credits

Major Course - 120 Credits:
- Compulsory courses of the Applied German Studies program with the code - HUMDEUGEN - 60 credits
- Compulsory-elective courses of the Anglistics program with the code - HUMDEU – no less than 48 credits, among them practical language courses
- Elective couses of Applied German Studies program with the code- HUMDEU – max. 12 credits
A student can obtain the credits determined for the optional courses in full or in part from the block of HUMDEU mandatory-elective courses
