About the program
The program was developed in 2011 and was updated in 2023. The program is updated at the beginning of each academic year for further improvement of the learning process.
Students of literary studies will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the current cultural processes in Europe and Georgia from the perspective of literary studies.
Program Aims
The bachelor’s program in literary studies allows students to study literary texts in their broad cultural, historical, and societal contexts. The program transcends the boundaries of literature of any one country, genre, style or era. Its goal is to prepare a competitive specialist in literary studies, who will be equipped with a broad knowledge of the theory and history of literature and be able to analyze and interpret literary works considering their genre, epoch and aesthetic features. In addition, the program develops the student's critical and creative thinking, reasoning and effective communication skills.
Major Fields of Study
The program of literary studies includes theory and analysis of literature, Georgian and European, and ancient literature. Discusses issues of literature in a general cultural context.
The program offers courses in the following contexts: literary eras; literary themes and literary motifs; literature and other media; great writers and great works.
Learning Outcomes and Competencies (General and Field Specific)
The program graduate can:
- explain the basic concepts, principles and concepts of literary studies;
- describe the aesthetic and structural features of literary genres;
- identify the main eras and trends in the literary history of one or more countries, as well as important representatives of those eras/trends; can convey the plot/theme of their paradigmatic works;
- relate literary works to their respective historical, intellectual and cultural contexts;
- analyze and interpret literary works;
- carry out a research project on a current significant issue/problem of literary studies
under the guidance; can find relevant resources (primary and secondary sources), evaluate and synthesize the obtained information;
communicate his/her ideas and arguments orally and in writing with specialists and non-specialists creatively, clearly and persuasively, adhering to the principles of academic integrity and using modern information technologies. Can demonstrate initiative and independence in the learning process and care about his/her further development and education.

Lecture; Seminar; Analysis/synthesis; Methods/elements of e-learning; Demonstration method; Discussions/debates; Brainstorming; Group work; Problem-based learning; Cooperative learning; Induction and deduction methods; Supervision; Reflection, etc.
Depending on the specifics of the learning components, other teaching methods can be used during the implementation of the program, which is presented in the syllabi of certain courses.

A course graduate is entitled to continue studies at the master’s level.
Structure of the Program
To obtain an academic degree – BA in Georgian Philology - a student must accumulate 240 credits according to the following scheme:
Free Component: General Module- 60 credits:
- Introduction to Contemporary Thought I, II - 12credits
- Academic Techniques- 6 credits
- Statistics -6 credits
- English Courses- 24 credits
- Introductory Courses INTRO - 12credits
Major Course -120 Credits:
- Compulsory courses of Literary Studies program- 48credits
- Compulsory-elective courses of Literary Studies Program - 60credits (No less than 6 credits from each compulsory-elective block)
- Elective courses of Literary Studies program - 12credits
Instead of elective courses, a student can choose compulsory-elective courses.
