Program goals:

The aim of the BA in Musical Arts program is to prepare a competent specialist with multifaceted creative abilities and broad knowledge of basic concepts, theories and approaches in the field of music. 

The flexible program will allow students to specialize and develop their own musical interests while   acquiring a solid, broad-based education in the fields of music theory and history, ethnomusicology, performing arts, and electroacoustic and computer music. In addition, the program is multidisciplinary and combines field-specific disciplines with components of general / liberal university education.

The program is based on the best international practices, namely,

on the experience of BA in music programs of the world's leading universities such as Cardiff University, University of Leeds, University of Sussex, University of York (Great Britain), California State University San Marcos, Penn State University, Washington University in St. Louis (USA), and such. 

 The program is also focused on the development transferable skills, such as critical analysis, argumentation and reasoning, oral and written communication in Georgian and foreign language, ability to work effectively individually and in a team.

Learning outcomes and competencies:

A graduate of the program demonstrates a broad knowledge of: 

  • Music in its broad historical, social, cultural, political, philosophical, economic, spiritual and religious contexts; also, about music’s position, function and value in human life in relation to educational, professional or societal perspectives;
  • The main periods in music history, the most important styles and genres and the relevant musical material;
  • The fundamentals of music theory;
  • The artistic, technical and aesthetic means of assimilating information, expressing it through music (including use of technology) and convincingly conveying it to the audience.

As a result of studying electroacoustic and computer music courses, the graduate is able to:

  • To generate, capture, analyze, edit and publish one’s own musical ideas/material;
  • To harness technological resources for the purposes of music composition, technology-based performance, music production, virtual instrument creation, sound synthesis, recording, and dissemination;
  • To design and build technological resources through computer coding, programming and

audio electronics for the purpose of interface design, composition and performance.

As a result of studying the courses of the music performance block, the graduate is able:

  • To study, analyze and perform a wide range of musical repertoire, including unfamiliar and new musical material;
  • To produce both solo and ensemble recital programs/projects/portfolios of different musical periods, styles and genres and communicate convincingly to an audience;

Also, the graduate is able to demonstrate such transferable skills as:

  • The ability to independently plan and manage their own learning process;
  • The ability to effectively cooperate with representatives of music, art and other fields, observing the principles of individual and teamwork.

Program structure:

General module - 60 credits Including:

  • Introduction to Modern Thought 1, 2 - 12 credits
  • Academic Work Techniques - 6 credits
  • Statistics - 6 credits
  • Practical Courses in English Language - 24 credits
  • Introductory Courses coded INTRO - 12 credits

Note: the Music program students must take the following courses: "Music Theory in Practice 1" and "Music History 1 (from ancient times to Romanticism)" In the second semester of the first academic year, along with the general module,

Major courses - 120 credits. Including:

  • Compulsory courses of the program - 18 credits

In case of focusing on electroacoustic and computer music courses the student is required to study 

  • Compulsory courses - 54 credits
  • Compulsory-elective courses - 24 credits

In the case of focusing on music performance courses the student is required to study:

  • Compulsory courses of the block - 18 credits
  • Compulsory-elective courses of the block - 54 credits

Elective courses of the program – minimum of 24-maximum of 36 credits

Free components or an additional program - 60 credits
