About the program

The program was developed in 2011 and was reaccredited in 2023. The program is updated at the beginning of each academic year for further improvement of the learning process.

Aim of the program

It aims to prepare a competitive specialist in the field of Russian philology who can/have:

  • use the Russian language competently at professional level for both oral and written communication with specialists and non-specialists;
  • basic knowledge of the Russian language as a system as well as its structure;
  • extensive knowledge of Russian literature and culture;
  • understand and analyze different types of Russian texts.

In addition, the program focuses on the development of such transferable skills as effective oral and written communication in Georgian and English, critical analysis and argumentative reasoning.

Study areas
The bachelor's program of Russian Studies combines the directions of linguistics and literary studies.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the program, the graduate:

  • can describe the main linguistic (grammatical, lexical, phonological, stylistic) categories of the Russian language;
  • can discuss selected works of important authors of several periods of the history of Russian literature; identify and analyze major themes, contexts, and artistic techniques;
  • demonstrates broad knowledge of Russian culture and key historical facts;
  • using appropriate terminology, linguistic and/or literary methods, can analyze different types of Russian-language texts and describe different linguistic layers;
  • can analyze texts taking into account certain historical, cultural and social contexts;
  • has developed Russian language competence at B2 level;
  • demonstrates the ability of coherent and substantiated reasoning when participating in sectoral, field-related discussions;
  • demonstrates the ability to learn independently; can search for and analyze the necessary, essential information.

Instruction Methods

Lecture; seminar; analysis/synthesis; practical method; methods/elements of e-learning; demonstration method; discussions/debates; brainstorming; group work.

Structure of the program

Structure of the BA program in Russian Studies:

  • Free Component: General Module- 60 credits
  • Major Course - 120 Credits
  • Minor program/Free Component- 60 credits

General Module- 60 credits:

  • Introduction to Contemporary Thought I, II - 12 credits
  • Academic Techniques- 6 credits
  • Statistics - 6 credits
  • English Courses- 24 credits
  • Introductory Courses - 12 credits

Major Course - 120 Credits:

  • Compulsory courses of the Russian Studies program with the code - HUMSLRU - 72credits
  • Compulsory-elective courses of the Russian Studies program with the code - HUMSLRU – no less than 42 credits, among them Practical Language Courses.
  • Elective couses of Russian Studies program with the code- HUMSLRU – max. 6 credits

Students can obtain the 6 credits determined for elective courses in full or in part from the block of HUMSLRU compulsory-elective courses.
