Kristine Margvelashvili’s Attendance at the “General Conference of European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR)”; Wroclaw, Poland; September 4-7, 2019

From 4th till 7th of September 2019 Kristine Margvelashvili attended General Conference of European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) in Wroclaw, Poland. ECPR’s General Conference remains Europe's largest annual gathering of political scientists, attracting more than 2,000 scholars from throughout the world and at all stages of their career. With nearly 500 Panels taking place across 70 Sections, this year's academic program covered the breadth of political science, creating the platform for lively discussion, exchange of ideas and the best thinking in the discipline. Kristine Margvelashvili presented her paper on “Desecularization in Orthodox Europe: Causes and Consequences” at the following Section of the General Conference: “Religion and Politics in a Secular age: Patterns, Dynamics and Consequences”. The section was organized by ECPR standing group on Religion and Politics. Section had eight panels in total. Kristine is an active member of the standing group as well as ECPR itself. Kristine’s paper touched upon desecularization process in Orthodox European countries, the role nationalism plays in it and how national churches are affecting political transformation processes. The study is a QCA (qualitative comparative analyses) and choses four Orthodox European states for comparison

The academic content was complemented by a stimulating plenary program, including Roundtables addressing topical or contentious themes such as Brexit and gender diversity in the field. Plenary Lecture delivered by Grzegorz Ekiert (Harvard University) on the Civil Society and Democracy. The timetable was completed by a carefully planned social program, offering many opportunities to meet with editors of publishing houses, such as: Palgrave Macmillan, Routledge Taylor & Francis Group, Wiley, Edinburg University Press and many more.
