ABOUT IDS

The International Doctoral School (IDS) was founded in 2017 at Ilia State University and is intended to become a model for modern, structured and effective doctoral education in Georgia, according to best-practice quality assurance standards. Its major objective is to safeguard a common doctoral education agenda with specific rules and guidelines in order to establish a modern and internationally oriented doctoral culture, thereby contributing to a durable model of effective, ‘brain-sustaining’ doctoral education in Georgia. Thus the IDS is generating an inclusive, interdisciplinary and international academic culture and research environment for doctoral students and fully acknowledges them as early stage researchers.

The IDS is the central entity of ISU that takes care of structured doctoral programs within an international context and Cotutelle-based doctorates. Therefore, the IDS not only works closely with the faculties, but also with other administrative entities of ISU and international partner institutions. The IDS stands for excellence in doctoral education and fosters international collaboration being set to attract the best minds, effectively support and guide them towards internationally competitive doctoral degrees.

As the first major IDS project, the Carl Friedrich Lehmann-Haupt International Doctoral Program (LHIDP) was initiated and has been running in cooperation with the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen since the beginning of 2018. The LHIDP gives the participating doctoral students the opportunity of receiving co-supervision from a Georgian-German supervisor team and being conferred doctoral degrees from each of the two universities upon successful completion of their doctoral projects.
