Brief Description of the Doctoral Project:

“Economic Costs of the August 2008 War between Georgia and Russia”

Doctoral project “Economic Costs of the August 2008 War between Georgia and Russia” aims to study and evaluate the total economic loss accrued to Georgia due to the August war by identifying the channels through which conflicts weaken economies and investigate all economic costs (including direct and indirect) associated with the war. If trade is positive-sum game that brings benefits to all its participants, war is ultimately a negative-sum game, where losses of the defeated outweigh benefits of winners (Nordhaus 2002). Hence, it is crucial to study economic climate and behavior during the conflict and in this way help policy-makers in developing effective policies for eliminating or reducing the negative costs of war and for developing long-term economic strategy, especially, when dealing with the frozen conflict.
