Brief Description of the Doctoral Project:

„Modelling solar global-scale Rossby Waves“

My Doctoral Project is about modelling global scale Rossby waves. Rossby waves, also known as planetary waves, arise due to the latitudinal variation of Coriolis parameter and they govern the large-scale dynamics of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans (Gill 1982). The Rossby waves can also play the important role in the largescale dynamics of the solar atmosphere and interior. For example, the Rossby waves can be responsible for observed Rieger-type periodicity on the Sun (Sturrock et al. 1999, Lou 2000, Zaqarashvili et al. 2010, Zaqarashvili 2018). Recent observational evidence of Rossby waves in the dynamics of coronal bright points (McIntosh et al. 2017) and subphotospheric layers (Löptien et al. 2018) significantly increase the interest towards Rossby waves in the solar context. Namely, Löptien et al. (2018) found a transition from turbulence-like to wave-like dynamics around certain wavenumber, which might explain the deficit of kinetic energy at the largest spatial scales. Detailed analytical and numerical studies are clearly necessary to understand the observations. The main goal of the doctoral thesis is to study the dynamics of large-scale Rossby waves in the conditions of the solar internal layers, their stability and the interaction with solar convection.
