Network for Alerting and Managing Public Safety and Resilience – REACT

A scientific meeting and training program, organized in collaboration with the Ca' Foscari University of Venice and CINSA - Interuniversity National Consortium for Environmental Sciences within the framework of the NATO Science for Peace and Security Program’s REACT (Network for Alerting and Managing Public Safety and Resilience) project was held in Venice (Italy) at the end of November 2022 with the participation of Ilia State University (Professor Ketevan Kupatadze of Ilia State University is the co-director of the project) responsible personnel and end users.

Meeting participants from the Georgian side were as follows:

  1. Ketevan Kupatadze – Professor, Ilia State University School of Natural Science and Medicine.
  2.  Ketevan Darakhvelidze – Head, Ilia State University Office of Development.
  3. Col. Malkhaz Lagurashvili – Project End-user. Head, Division of CBRN Incidents Response of the Emergency Management Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
  4. Tamar Edisherashvili – REACT Project Scholarship Recipient, Young Scientist, PhD student at Ilia State University.
  5. Lekso Toriashvili – REACT Project Scholarship Recipient, young scientist, PhD student at Ilia State University.

During the first day of the meeting, participants summarized research studies that had previously been carried out and Professor Andrea Gambaro analyzed the state of air pollution in Venice.

NATO Science for Peace and Security Program’s scientific representative Eyüp Turmuş spoke about the particular significance of the project. Mr Turmuş highlighted the importance of Georgia’s participation in the project and expressed NATO’s expectation for more projects from Georgia in the future.

Ketevan Kupatadze unveiled a plan where air chemical safety monitoring sensors will be installed across the country and why the particular locations were selected for research purposes. She also introduced a research plan before the scientific community.

Project participant from the USA, Professor David Ebert of Purdue University, talked about the alarm network platform and presented its working platform.

Animated film made for the project was also premiered as part of the meeting and Marco Benedetti, head of the Italian delegation of the project organized a film-related special exhibition.

The next day, Georgian participants were given a special opportunity to take part in the workshop on assembling units and working with sensors hosted by Ca' Foscari University of Venice. Afterwards, the Georgian delegation had business meetings with other academic personnel of the university where plans for future scientific cooperation were outlined.

Air quality monitoring sensors, transferred to Ilia State University as part of the project, are already deployed in Tbilisi and the installation and data collection will start in the nearest future.

The third working meeting, scheduled for June 2023, will be hosted by Ilia State University on behalf of the Georgian side.
