About the program

The program was developed in 2011 and was updated in 2022. The program is updated at the beginning of each academic year for further improvement of the learning process.

The program of Georgian philology allows the student to learn about the historical and cultural context of the native language, which she/he will effectively use during the generalization and analysis of scientific information to create new philological knowledge.

Program Aims

The program aims to give the student a broad theoretical knowledge of the phonetics-phonology, morphology and syntax of the Georgian language, to develop the skills of synthesis and analysis of the foundations, principles and basic theories of linguistics and literary studies as well as teach field terminology. In addition, the program allows students to study and explore historical and cultural contexts of the Georgian language and literature and enables them to develop such transferable skills as written and oral communication, reasoning and critical analysis, individual and team work.

Major Fields of Study

The Program of Georgian Philology offers the following fields of study:

Linguistics, which includes the study of Georgian linguistics in a general context, morphology, syntax, lexicology, stylistics, computational linguistics and linguistic issues of the Megrelian, Laz and Svan languages.

Literary Studies that includes the theories and analysis of literature. The following eras of Georgian literature: Old Georgian Literature, Medieval Georgian Literature, New, Recent, Modern Georgian Literature and their discussion in the context of international literature.

The graduate of the program will be able to perform research and/or practical work, interpret the data received and present it effectively according to predefined instructions.

Learning Outcomes and Competencies (General and Field Specific)

Upon completion of the program, a graduate:

  1. can describe basic issues of the structure and functioning of the Georgian language and demonstrate knowledge of the main theories of linguistics;
  2.  theoretically conveys the basic issues of phonetics-phonology, morphology and syntax of the Georgian language and practically analyzes the relevant linguistic material;
  3.  is familiar with the field terminology and knows the methodology of analysis material processing;
  4.  demonstrates knowledge of the basics and principles of literary studies, knows the main aspects of the theory and history of literature;
  5.  has the ability to read, analyze and interpret a literary text as well as the ability to identify connections with eras, currents, and cultural styles of world literature;
  6.  can contextualize Georgian literature, and connect it with historical-political, cultural and social processes;
  7.  has developed a critical, self-reflective approach to the history of Georgian literature and culture; can identify and critically evaluate ethical, historical-ideological issues in a literary text;
  8.  can analyze literary texts based on the principles of tolerance; shows respect for Georgian and other languages;
  9.  can practically use information and communication technologies, library and electronic resources based on the need; Acts in compliance with the principles of individual and team work, taking into account the norms of academic integrity.

Lecture; Seminar; Analysis and Synthesis; Electronic and hybrid learning elements; Demonstration method; Practical method; Discussions/Debates; Brainstorming; Group work; Case study; Cooperative learning; Induction/deduction; Supervision; Reflection, etc.

Depending on the specifics of the learning components, other teaching methods can be used during the implementation of the program, which is presented in the syllabi of certain courses.

A course graduate is entitled to continue studies at the master’s level.

Structure of the Program

To obtain an academic degree – BA in Georgian Philology - a student must accumulate 240 credits according to the following scheme:

Free Component: General Module- 60 credits:  

  • Introduction to Contemporary Thought I, II - 12 credits
  • Academic Techniques- 6 credits
  • Statistics - 6 credits
  • English Courses- 24 credits
  • Introductory Courses INTRO - 12 credits

Major Course - 120 Credits:

  • Compulsory Courses -   60 credits;
  • Compulsory-elective Courses -   no less than 42 credits;
  • Elective Courses-   no more than 18 credits;

Instead of elective courses, a student can choose compulsory elective courses.
