On March 18, as part of the Women's History Month, Professor Nino Doborjginidze, Ilia State University (ISU) Rector, visited EuroClub Kvareli and delivered a public lecture on "Enlightenment as a Civil Movement in the 19th Century Georgia".

The lecture was organized by the ISU School of Law Human Rights department with the support of the USAID Rule of Law Program.

Nino Doborjginidze discussed the educational initiatives of the Society for Spreading Literacy among Georgians in the second half of the 19th century and the unique role of women members of the Society.

The lecture revealed previously unknown stories of civil activism and membership-based self-organization from different regions of Georgia. Moreover, the research results were presented on the role of women members of the Society in educational and library activities as well as the establishment and management of local organizations.

The importance of women educators in the 19th-century great national project was illustrated in a digital project developed by the ISU “Prosopographical Database of the Society for the Spread of Literacy among Georgians” (https://society.iliauni.edu.ge/).
