The human rights department of the School of Law of Ilia State University invites you to a discussion organized by the Socrates Club with the support of the USAID Rule of Law Program, which will be devoted to the examination of Khanum Jeiranova's case on October 11, at 19:00.

In 2014, Khanum Jeiranova was found dead as a result of physical and psychological violence in Lambalo village of Sagarejo district. Suicide was preceded by public insults from fellow villagers and relatives. Jeiranova was accused of cheating on her husband, and in the name of restoring dignity, she was physically assaulted.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, in its decision №C/80/D/140/2019 of October 25, 2021, regarding this case, concluded that Georgia failed to ensure the protection of Khanum Jeiranova and to investigate and prosecute gender and honor-based violence against a woman, which led to her suicide.

Socrates Club, a new project of the Human Rights Department of the School of Law of Iliauni, aims to analyze important and interesting decisions from the perspective of human rights and to lead discussions based on them, which guarantees the students and the judicial system getting closer.

A discussion using the Socratic Method will be used at the meeting, which will allow us to identify the problem and find ways to solve it by asking appropriate questions and placing relevant emphasis.

The 3 most active (activity is calculated by the number of signatures on the attendance sheet) students, who attended the event organized by the Human Rights Department, will be identified at the end of the semester and will be awarded by the Dean of the School of Law.
