Discussions

The Department of Human Rights of Ilia State University invites you to the public lecture of Nino Doborjginidze, the rector of Ilia State University, on the topic “Women members of the Society for Spreading Literacy among Georgians” with the support of the USAID Rule of Law Program within the framework of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign on December 8, at 18:00.

Before the lecture, a mural of women members of the Society for Spreading Literacy among Georgians, created by Musia Keburia, will be opened in the Building B of the university.

2273 women were members of the Society for Spreading Literacy among Georgians from the day of its creation until the Sovietization of Georgia (1879-1921). Women members of the society actively participated in the establishment, management and, in general, activities of local organizations.

The main Georgian educators of the last quarter of the nineteenth century were women in this great national project, the establishment of Georgian-language schools was a special event in this model, and the driving force of the main pillar - schools and libraries - were mostly women.

In the first quarter of the 20th century, the Women's League was formed, and in 1917-1918, the weekly newspaper “The Voice of Georgian Woman” was published. In 1918, women in Georgia received the right to vote and became members of the founding assembly. After the first democratic elections, Pari-Khanum Sofieva, a member of the Tbilisi Mazri ethnic group from Karajala, became the first Muslim female MP in the world.

After the public lecture, we will review the participation of women in this extremely interesting process of formation of political society and state identity during the discussion. The discussion will be moderated by Tamar Gurchiani, Associate Professor, School of Law of Ilia State University.

At the end of the semester, the 3 most active (activity is calculated by the number of signatures on the attendance sheet) students attending the events organized by the Department of Human Rights will be identified, who will be awarded by the Dean of the School of Law.
