Panel Discussion “Making use of the freedom of expression by victims of violence”

Discussions

The Department of Human Rights of the School of Law of Ilia State University invites you to a panel discussion, organized with the support of the USAID Rule of Law Program and in cooperation with the Socrates Club and the Georgian Young Lawyers' Association, which will discuss the case of E.M. (April 13, 2022) on December 7, at 19:00.

After E.M. spoke publicly about her experience of sexual harassment at the workplace, a defamation lawsuit was filed against her, despite the fact that the public defender had already established the fact of sexual harassment. In relation to the present case, we will discuss what danger the fight against sexual harassment may bring to the victim and whether this harms the honor and dignity of the abuser.

The case was discussed in the courts of all three instances. Discussing the facts of sexual harassment at the workplace is very important, if the victim has the obligation to deny the facts established by the public defender, this will lead to the violation of her rights and secondary victimization, as well as the minimization of the violence experienced due to sexual harassment. Therefore, it is necessary to talk about the meaning and scope of the victim's freedom of expression.

Socrates Club, a new project of the Department of Human Rights of the School of Law of Iliauni, aims to analyze important and interesting decisions from the perspective of human rights and lead discussions around them.

At the end of the semester, the 3 most active (activity is calculated by the number of signatures on the attendance sheet) students participating in the events organized by the Department of Human Rights will be identified and awarded by the Dean of the School of Law.
