The Unbearable Lightness of Neutrinos - Public Lecture by Professor Diana Parno

Events

The public lecture The Unbearable Lightness of Neutrinos by Diana Parno, associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University, will be delivered at the book house Ligamus on March 16, at 18:00.

About the Lecture

More than 90 years have passed since the discovery of this strange and ghostly particle called the neutrino, but it still inspires nuclear and particle physicists. After decades of experimental and theoretical efforts, now we know neutrinos have mass, although the absolute mass scale is still unknown. After years of planning, design, construction and operation, the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino Experiment (KATRIN) has twice enhanced our understanding of neutrino mass.

Professor Diana Parno will give a tour of KATRIN's 70-m beamline, and tell about the future of the experiment and how it can test theories of the early universe and dark matter.

About the Speaker

Diana Parno earned her PhD from Carnegie Mellon University in 2011. Her dissertation on the spin structure of the neutron was explored at the Jefferson Lab. After that, she became interested in another neutral particle – neutrino, when she first held a postdoc position at the University of Washington and later the research professor and Associate Director of the Center for Experimental Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics (CENPA).

In 2017, she returned to Carnegie Mellon University, where she is now an Associate Professor of Physics.

She participates in the analysis coordination groups of the KATRIN and COHERENT experiments. In 2021, she received a U.S. Department of Energy Career Award (DOE Early Career Award), which funds her research on the heavy water COHERENT experiment detector.

In 2018, she also chaired the group that developed recommendations for minorities inclusion in Physics and Astronomy Departments.
