The Noise Silence Makes: The Ghanaian State Negotiates Ritual Ban on Noise Making

Events

The speaker will address Ghanaian secularism against the backdrop of the ritual restriction of noise imposed by the traditional community. In the 1990s, the ban lead to a tension between the traditional community and Pentecostal/Charismatic church congregations as some of the churches violated the ‘sonic fast’. The presentation is based on research that examines the role of the Ghanaian state in resolving the religious conflict.
