Dealing with Smallness in Habsburg Bohemia, Ottoman Albania and Tsarist Georgia in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries

Events

The biweekly research colloquium of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research at Ilia State University will host Prof. Adrian Brisku’s online seminar on the 22nd of March, at 7 pm Tbilisi time. Prof. Brisku will give a talk under the title “Dealing with Smallness in Habsburg Bohemia, Ottoman Albania and Tsarist Georgia in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries”.

Abstract:

Drawing largely on a recently published chapter under the same tittle in an edited volume entitled, The Politics of Smallness in Modern Europe (Bloomsbury Academic, 2022), this talk historically reconstructs, compares, and contrasts the language of being a small nation among intellectuals and political activists/statemen in late imperial Habsburg Bohemia, Ottoman Albanian and Tsarist Georgia. Irrespective of differing historical trajectories and political and economic development of the three cases, which will be highlighted in the discussion, the talk will suggest that there was a similarity in the meaning behind the discourse of smallness and in the strategies to be pursued in dealing with it.
