Leadership in Health Sector

From Personal Development to Evidence-Based Decisions and Systems Transformation

An interactive leadership introductory course |  5 online meetings × 2.5-3 hours  |  up to 15 participants

Dates: November 2, 6, 9, 13, 16

Lecturer: Eka Paatashvili, Associate Professor

Why this course?

Leadership is not only a position. It is the capacity to use evidence and judgment, influence others, and drive responsible change.

Leaders in health sector face scientific complexity, limited resources, ethical dilemmas, multidisciplinary teams, organizational resistance, multiple stakeholders, and decisions with consequences for individuals and populations. Artificial intelligence and digital transformation are also changing how evidence is produced, decisions are supported, and health services are organized. Obviously, subject expertise cannot be enough and continuous development is fundamental for modern leaders.

What will we explore?

Personal leadership: Leadership types and styles; what makes leaders effective; values, strengths, emotional intelligence, and cognitive biases.

Evidence-based decisions: Appraising and applying evidence; balancing data, context, ethics, uncertainty, stakeholder perspectives, and time and budget pressure.

Leading teams: Group dynamics, motivation, trust, psychological safety, communication, feedback, and conflict.

Leading organizations and change: Organizational culture and strategy; leadership in crisis, new initiatives, growth, scaling, and resistance to change.

Digital-era and systems leadership: AI and digital health, responsible innovation, accountability, equity, systems thinking, and cross-sector collaboration.

How will we learn?

This participatory course combines short conceptual inputs with leadership self-assessments, case-based small-group challenges, simulations, debates, critical-thinking and systems-thinking exercises, and structured peer feedback. Participants will practice making and defending decisions where there is no single easy answer.

What will you take away?

You will better understand your leadership profile; strengthen evidence-based decision-making under uncertainty; develop approaches to motivating teams and managing conflict; analyze organizational culture and change; and critically assess leadership challenges associated with AI and digital transformation. You will leave with a personal leadership development blueprint identifying strengths and practical next steps.
