Events

 On 29th of September Ilia State University (ISU), as part of the NATO Science for Peace and Security Program hosted the final meeting on the framework of the project "Network for Alerting and Managing Public Safety and Resilience - REACT."

The project aims to create an air monitoringand alerting system in the event of terroristor other attacks, as well as to develop response protocols in case of ambient air pollution with particularly dangerous chemical agents.

The meeting was attended by three partner countries:

1. University of Venice Kafoscari, Consortium CISNA (Italy);Prof. Andrea Gambaro (Andrea GAMBARO); Prof. Marco Benedetti(Marco BENEDETTI);

2. Ilia State University (Georgia);Prof. Ketevan Kupatadze (Ketevan KUPATADZE);

3. University of Oklahoma (USA);Prof. David Ebert (David EBERT);

Italian and American partners of the project, Representatives of partner organizations, Professors of Ilia State University were the participants of the meeting. The meeting took place in a hybrid format. Director of CINSA Scientific Consortium, Prof. Nelson Marmiroli and NATO SPS Program Advisor and Manager, Dr. Eyub Turmush (SPS Advisor and Program Manager).

The project also involves young scientists from Georgia: Tamar Edisherashvili; Eter Maghradze; Lekso Toriashvili; Giorgi Yankoshvili; Giorgi Khubashvili also are participants of the project.

The availability of the SMART platform of the project and the results will be shared with the project partners from Georgia: Ministry of Internal Affairs (CBRNE Division); The Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia; National Environment Agency; TPDC; Association of Professional Chemists of Georgia; School "Sadun".

The project was launched in November, 2020,within which the online workshops were systematically held. Furthermore, two offline meetings were carried out in Rome (December, 2021) and Venice (October, 2022), along with the special training provided for the Georgian team.

Air monitoring sensors are located in four destinations:

  • Chavchavadze Avenue;
  • Cholokashvili Avenue;
  • Leghvtakhevi (old Tbilisi);
  • Nutsubidze Street.

SO 2; NO 2; PM1; PM2,5; PM10, as well as meteoro-logical data such as wind direction and strength,humidity, atmospheric pressure, temperature are measured by the sensors. The sensors also measure the noise level, which is of particular importance.Since 2008, noise has been officially included in the list of environmental pollutants.

The projects main advantage is to study the dynamics of pollutants in the air against the background of social or natural events.

The research is ongoing from March 2023. According to the received data, the quality  of air in Tbilisi ranges from satisfactory to good. Research is still ongoing.
