Prof. Manfred Nowak at Iliauni

On April 11 Manfred Nowak, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, delivered a public lecture on “Torture in the 21st Century”. Students from Ilia State University and other universities as well attended the lecture.

Manfred Nowak, Professor at the University of Vienna and Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights, is one of the renowned human rights experts. His academic career includes 400 publications. He was a UN Expert on Missing Persons in former Yugoslavia in 1994-1997 and a Judge at the Human Rights Chamber in Bosnia from 1996 to 2003.

Manfred Nowak talked about the difficulties he faced through his six-year works and discussed cases of various countries. Pr. Nowak introduced the newest statistic data to the audience and explained them the differences between torture and bad treatment. 

At the end of the meeting, Pr. Nowak reviewed the ways and approaches effective enough to prevent torture.
