Prevention and Reduction of the Statelessness

On November 9 Ilia State University held a public lecture/seminar about "Reduction and Prevention of Statelessness".

Lecture/seminar was delivered by Nato Gagnidze - Centre for Innovations and Reforms; Giorgi Amisulashvili - State Services Development Agency (Ministry of Justice); Sopho Jambazishvili - United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

On the meeting speakers talked about the status of the people without citizenship, discussed possibility of becoming the members of 1961 conventions about reduction of statelessness and spoke about the issues of implementation of these conventions. The discussion also addressed Georgian experience and the statistical index, in particular, according to the official statistics from July 2011 there are 1781 de jure people found and registered by the state. But is should be noted that parents are passive in registering their newborns and this increases the probability that the number of people without citizenship is higher.

ISU College of Law students were attending the meeting. The lecture was followed by the discussion.
