March 31, a delegation of the Max Weber Foundation (Bonn, Germany) led by the Managing Director of Foundation, Dr. Harald Rosenbach, visited Ilia State University and met with the rector Nino Doborjgenidze and professors Oliver Reisner and Tilmann Kulke. The members of delegation, Dr. Sandra Dahlke, Dr. Andreas Hilger, Dr. Esther Meier and Mariia Chasovskaia informed the rector about their plans to open a Max Weber Foundation (Bonn) liaison office in Tbilisi in September 2023 with PD Dr. Andreas Hilger as its representative. It will function as a hub for research cooperation and offer plenty of opportunities for cooperation between German and Georgian historians, working on modern and contemporary history from the late 18th until the 20th century. Three major fields are planned for cooperation: 1) History of the Black Sea Region in Global Context, 2) Russia's Imperial History and 3) the history of German-Georgian relations. There will be opportunities for short-term research scholarships as well as participation in international scientific networks. Another important field will be support to archival research and cooperation especially with German archival institutions.
Rector Nino Doborjgenidze and professors Oliver Reisner and Tilmann Kulke presented the ongoing and planned research in the field of modern history and the strategic plans for introducing the Caucasus into the research discourse of global history. Also the important efforts in the field of digital humanities as a basis for research at ISU were discussed.
The Max Weber Foundation is one of the leading agencies supporting German research in the humanities and social sciences abroad. Around the world it finances eleven scientifically autonomous institutes, which provides a bridge function between the host nations and Germany and which plays an important role in the international science scene. Being a multi-polar network, the institutes collaborate in the promotion of the internationalisation of science.
