Ilia State University Law School Dean Giorgi Tumanishvili was elected a Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition judge. Jessup International Competition is the most prestigious among moot courts; it was founded in 1963. Every year 600 law schools from 90 countries wish to compete in it. The moot involves case between two states presented to the International Court of Justice. It is held annually in Washington D.C.
The moot involves arguing a hypothetical case on issues of international law as if before the International Court of Justice.
Each team usually includes 5 members. Teams must prepare to argue the sides of both the Applicant and Respondent in the case. Two participants then present randomly-assigned side of the case for each round.
Jessup popularity and prestige is largely determined by the student opportunities that the participants receive through international competition. By the time that teams reach finals, students become well-aware of international law principles, they acquire good knowledge of international case law and current events.
Consequently, the fact that ISU Law School Dean is elected as a judge and one of the leading evaluators allows for raised international awareness of not only for the Law School, but the whole university.
