“Georgia vs USSR”
On November 7, 2010 Ilia State University launched a mock court hearing “Georgia vs USSR: Tbilisi Process”. The court session was prepared as a part of an academic education format of the University in soviet and post-soviet studies and is based on a legal concept of an international Nuremberg trial of Nazis in 1945. During the court session, which was chaired by the Head of the Constitutional Court of Georgia Giorgi Papuashvili, students discussed a legal episode from 1921: “Occupation of Democratic Republic of Georgia”.
Students of Ilia State University conducted their research for one and a half years at the University archives where they collected, studied and analyzed materials about the Soviet Union. Accusations and arguments of the attorney, which were delivered during the hearing were quite solid and based on investigated material. The imitated court session, “Georgia vs USSR: Tbilisi Process” was especially interesting and important because the students covered issues that are still not openly discussed in Russia.
