Discussion of Constitutional Changes

On August 12, 2010 Ilia State University hosted a discussion of a new constitutional project. Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia Mr. David Bakradze briefed professors and students of the University about planed amendements. According to him it is very important to know the opinion of every citizen of Georgia in order to elaborate the final version of the constitution.

The meeting was attended by the members of a constitutional committee and parliament (Goka Gabashvili, Guram Chakhvadze, Jondi Baghaturia etc.).

David Bakradze said: “The new constitution introduces those balance mechanisms between different governmental branches which are common for traditional European constitutional model. After constitutional changes, parties will have more motivation to participate in the elections as the winner will be the one in charge of forming a new cabinet of ministers.”

The meeting was held in a Q&A format. Professors and students asked the question about such topics as the unlimited period for appointment of judges and strengthening of local authorities. The new constitutional project, which plans to introduce European form of mixed governance, has received an overall positive response.
