Deportation of Chechen and Ingush People

ISU students organized a moot court “Georgia VS Soviet Union” and discussed a legal episode of 1944: “Deportation of Chechen and Ingush People”.

The trial based on the legal concept of Newberg International Tribunal of 1945 against Nazism was prepared within the framework of ISU Soviet and Post-soviet Research Studies.

The students prepared a charter of the trial in compliance with the procedural requirements of Georgian and International Courts and according to civilized and fair trial standards. The charter was approved by the Scientific Council of the university.

The prosecution side faulted the elite of the Soviet Union for the deportation of Chechens and Ingush, inhuman treatment and anti-human actions.

The defense side represented the arguments including historical facts about the desertions of Chechens and Ingush. The defense side tried to prove the facts that Chechen and Ingush people attacked military and state officials, organized rebels and declared disobedience as well.

The court was leaded by George Papuashvili, Chairman of Constitutional Court of Georgia. At the end of the session, Mr. Papuashvili gave recommendations to both sides and claimed them to prepare and represent materials with indication of concrete sources and exact statistics data. The prosecution side was given a task to demonstrate the outcomes of the deportation.
