News

A new scientific book, “Geoheritage of Georgia: The Caucasus,” has been published through a collaboration between the German-based international academic publisher Springer Nature and the Institute of Earth Sciences and National Seismic Monitoring Center of Ilia State University.

The book is edited by Professor Avtandil Okrostsvaridze of Ilia State University and Daniel Tormey, an American geologist and international expert in geoheritage.

The book represents the first attempt at a comprehensive study of Georgia’s unique geological heritage. It explores the country’s geological history and diversity, the formation of the Caucasus mountain system, volcanic processes, glaciers, caves, river valleys, and other remarkable geological features.

Particular attention is given to the conservation of geological heritage, the development of geotourism and the prospects for establishing UNESCO Global Geoparks in Georgia, as well as the relationship between natural landscapes and cultural heritage.

The book brings together the expertise of Georgian and international researchers and presents Georgia’s geological heritage in a contemporary international scientific context. It also proposes criteria for identifying and assessing Key Geoheritage Areas in Georgia, providing an important foundation for the conservation of the country’s natural heritage and sustainable development.

The book consists of 218 pages, 26 chapters, and 175 illustrations. It is published in Springer’s scientific series Geoheritage, Geoparks and Geotourism.
