Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Skills Training

Outline:

The programme will focus on developing students’ enterprise skills and supporting them to create their own ventures in the creative industries. The programme will be delivered as an intensive ‘business bootcamp at Ilia State University. The programme will guide students through the business start-up journey and equip them with skills in business planning, ideation and pitching.

The Programme will be delivered in 3 Cohorts:

Cohort I

Audience:

University students with an idea for a business or an interest in pursuing an entrepreneurial career path within the creative industries.

Objectives:

  • Developing students’ knowledge of business start-up in a creative industry context;
  • Providing students with the skills to launch a business in the creative industries;
  • Raising awareness of Creative Spark and of the value of enterprising skills more broadly.

Session 1. Developing the Idea – April 11th -12th -13th, 2019

  • 1:00pm to 1:45pm – Innovation Based Entrepreneurship - introductory session by David Chechelashvili on innovation-based on entrepreneurship – getting the basic right and the road ahead.

Apart from the introductory session, Professor Gurpreet Jagpal and Lauren Davies will be the main facilitators.

  • 1:45pm to 2pm- Break

  • 2pm to 3:15pm – Ideation – a range of creative thinking and idea generation tools will be introduced to the students and they will be invited to think about problems or challenges that they encounter in their everyday life that could be solved with a business/social enterprise solution.

  • 3:15pm to 4:15pm – Idea development – students will learn how to evaluate ideas effectively and to develop their business models using the Business Model Canvas.

  • 4:15pm to 4:30pm – Break

  • 4:30pm to 5:45pm – Understanding the market – students will be provided with practical tools to help them determine whether there is a market for their idea. This will include competitor analysis techniques and customer profiling tools based on the Lean Start Up methodology.

  • 5:45pm to 7:00pm – Marketing the idea – building on the previous session, this session will focus on practical marketing tools and techniques that can be used to attract new customers and raise the profile of the business.

Session 2. Building the Business – April 12th-13th -14th, 2019

  • 9:00am to 10:20am – Financial and Funding – the students will work through practical activities to determine whether their idea is financially viable and will explore potential sources of funding to start or develop their idea.

  • 10:20am to 10:30am- Break

  • 10:30am to 11:00am – Intellectual Property – the students will be introduced to some of the key concepts in intellectual property and referred to appropriate resources for further support at a local level. (This particular session will be run by Teona Bebia- Patent and Licensing Associate at Technology Commercialization Office (TCO), ISU)

  • 11:00am to 12:00pm – Pitching the idea – students will construct a one-minute ‘elevator’ pitch that clearly articulates their business idea. Students will practice their pitch in small groups and provide feedback to each other.

Professor Gurpreet Jagpal
Professor and Director of the Aldridge Institute for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship

Gurpreet is the Professor and Director of the Aldridge Institute for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, which is a pioneer in enterprise education, established to transform the futures of young people and support the next generation of entrepreneurs thereby creating a more successful economy.

Prior to this, Gups was Director of Research, Enterprise and Innovation at London South Bank University (LSBU, and CEO of South Bank University Enterprises Ltd (SBUEL) where his main responsibilities include the strategic and day-to-day operations for London South Bank University’s (LSBU) research and enterprise activities.

An inspirational, transformational and visionary Director, with over a decade of experience, spanning a number of higher education institutions, Gurpreet has successfully established, executed and fostered the growth of a number of enterprise and business outreach centres strengthening their links with local industry.

His expertise span the areas of: research support; knowledge transfer; enterprise skills; entrepreneurship; innovation; life coaching; management consulting; mentoring; project management; commercial property and business development. Gurpreet also runs his own residential property business specialising in buy-to-lets and project-managing renovations.

Lauren Davies
Lecturer in Enterprise & Entrepreneurship, Director of Enterprise Educators UK

MSc in Strategic Marketing, First Class BA (Hons) Business Studies with Marketing
Lauren is Lecturer in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at the Aldridge Institute for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship within UWE Bristol. Her role involves developing and delivering professional development programmes for school teachers on embedding enterprise skills into the curriculum, delivering extracurricular entrepreneurship programmes for school children and conducting academic research to demonstrate the impact of enterprise education.
Lauren is a dedicated and enthusiastic enterprise educator with extensive experience in higher education. She is experienced in teaching enterprise and entrepreneurship to students from various disciplines and working with students on a one-to-one basis to support their idea development.
She is currently Director of Enterprise Educators UK - serving a three-year term, which started in August 2018 having been elected by her peers in the sector. The role involves influencing policy on enterprise education, representing the views of the sector and shaping the strategic direction of the organisation.
Lauren has recently achieved at Distinction MSc in Strategic Marketing and is currently working towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Professional Practice. In 2014 she became a fellow the National Centre for Entrepreneurship in Education, having completed the extensive International Entrepreneurship Educators Programme.


Davit Chechelashvili

David has been an entrepreneur and held numerous strategy and business development positions in hi-tech startups since 1999. His fields of experience span from hard core technology disciplines like immersive visualization solutions, VR/AR, Stereo 3D to sophisticated consumer marketing industries including retail and education.

As an entrepreneur, David was one of the founders of Neurok Optics and iZ3D.
As a strategy executive, David determined strategic direction at X6D Ltd (known under DBA XPAND) in addition to Neurok Optics and iZ3D. He has a proven track record in building retail presence, distribution channels (including OEM) and strategic partnerships for both, small private companies (X6D, Neurok, iZ3D) and divisions of larger companies (MicroAge, Deloitte & Touche, Renaissance Capital).

From 2014 David has been a visiting lecturer at Ilia State University and a Marketing and Business Development specialist of Technology Commercialization Office (TCO) at the same university.
David is a mentor for Startup Braga (Portugal) and the Innovation and Technology Agency. He also heads the local chapter of StartUp Grind, a global startup community designed to educate, inspire and connect entrepreneurs.
