Ilia State University in Times Higher Education Young University Rankings

News

Ilia State University was included in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2022 list (listing universities that are 50 years old or younger).

The ranking evaluated 790 universities worldwide out of which only 539 universities met the criteria and were included in the ranking.

Ilia State University is the only institution from Georgia in the ranking.

For the 2022 ranking, Elsevier’s database, bibliometric data provider, reviewed and analyzed more than 108 million citations across over 14.4 million research publications based on data from more than 24,600 academic journals indexed in the Scopus database. The ranking also included survey responses from almost 22,000 scholars globally. Times Higher Education Young University Ranking uses 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators, that are grouped into five areas: or “pillars”, which are weighted according to relative importance and provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, which, in turn, are key areas of improvement in higher education.

Pillars

  • Teaching (30%): Learning environment
  • Research (30%): Volume, Income and Reputation
  • Citation (30%): Research Influence
  • Industry Income (2.5%): knowledge transfer
  • International Outlook (7.5%): International staff, Students and research collaborations

As can be seen from the pillars, the largest share in the ranking - 60% comes from research and research impact, categories that assess the impact of scientific work performed by academic and research staff on science globally. "Citation: Research Impact" category looks at the impact of scientific activities performed by academic and scientific staff on a global level. The research impact indicator evaluates universities in terms of disseminating new knowledge and ideas. Ilia State University has a relatively high score of 34.6 in relation to the neighboring educational-research institutions in this category (see chart). For example, Carlos III University of Madrid has a citation rate of 28.4, the University of East London 32.3, and the National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan, which is in the top 200 list of young universities, the citation rate is 25.4.
