In the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) Interdisciplinary Research Rankings, Ilia State University ranks first in Georgia, with results that are twice as high as those of other Georgian universities included in the list (all of which are placed in the 800+ range). Internationally, Ilia State University is ranked in the 401–500 group worldwide, out of 994 ranked universities from 92 countries, selected from 1,267 candidate institutions

Interdisciplinary Science Rankings evaluate universities worldwide on their commitment to and contributions to interdisciplinary research. As interdisciplinary science becomes one of the central directions of global scientific development, Iliauni continues to hold a leading position in Georgia, demonstrating strong performance and national leadership in this rapidly evolving field.

The Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings (ISR), produced in association with Schmidt Science Fellows, is the first effort of its kind to measure universities’ contributions and commitment to interdisciplinary science.

The ISR methodology consists of three pillars :

  • Inputs: funding and resources
  • Process: Success indicators, infrastructure, administrative support, and research facilitation.
  • Outputs: Publications, research quality, and academic reputation.

The assessment is based on 11 sub-metrics, each representing a stage in the life cycle of research projects.

It is particularly noteworthy that Ilia State University received a score of 51.9 in the Outputs indicator, reflecting its strong scientific productivity, high-quality research, and growing international reputation. With this score, Iliauni surpasses several well-established universities, including: the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy (ranked 190th in the main list); Keio University, Japan (195th); the University of Salamanca, Spain (156th); and the University of Limerick, Ireland (141st).
