Visit of the ABET Evaluation Teams to Ilia State University

News

On October 4–6, evaluation teams from ABET - representing Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) and Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) conducted an on-site visit to Ilia State University. Engaging with university leadership and program chairs, academic staff from the programs under review, members of the Industry Advisory Boards, and students, the ABET evaluation teams conducted a comprehensive review of the engineering and computer science programs at the School of Technology.

Implementing international standards in engineering and computer science is vital for developing high-quality, relevant academic programs. This process entails a systematic assessment of Program Educational Objectives, Student Outcomes, curricular components, faculty qualifications, and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) processes. For Ilia State University, this evaluation serves as an essential element of its long-term strategy for advancing engineering and computer science education.

Building on international best practices, Ilia State University plans to deepen its collaboration with international advisory boards and partner institutions to develop master’s and doctoral programs in engineering and computer science. This strategic direction ensures closer integration of educational curricula with research components, further strengthening the university’s active presence in the global academic community.

Advancing internationally recognized engineering education can directly drive national technological progress, requiring sustained and consistent state support. To achieve meaningful growth in national technological capacity, embedding ABET standards in academic programs must remain a central priority within higher education public policy and funding frameworks.

The development of international technology and engineering degree programs is the result of a long-standing, close partnership among Ilia State University, the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA-Georgia / MCC), San Diego State University (SDSU), and the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia. Through this strategic partnership, supported by American peers and co-funded by the U.S. and Georgian governments alongside Ilia State University, a new four-story Technology Building was constructed (with significant co-funding from the university budget), state-of-the-art engineering laboratories were established, faculty were trained, and academic programs were fully aligned with U.S. education and accreditation standards. This collaborative effort among the university, international donors, and the Ministry has delivered an unprecedented

benchmark for Georgian higher education, enabling students to earn internationally recognized engineering and computer science degrees in their home country.
