Support of Ilia State University from the International Association of Universities

Announcements

Dear Nino Doborjginidze,

In recognition of the extraordinary challenges that Ilia State University is confronting in the current reform of Georgia’s higher education system, I am writing to express the support of the International Association of Universities. The recently announced changes, including the severe reduction in admission quotas and narrowing of permitted fields of study, pose a direct threat to ISU's broad academic mission and its capacity to educate future generations.

We have seen how these decisions have mobilised your faculty, students, and staff in defence of academic autonomy and institutional integrity. This is a moment that tests not only your university’s resilience, but also the shared values of openness, critical inquiry, and academic diversity that have been the hallmarks of Ilia State University’s growth and impact both in Georgia and internationally.

As Secretary General of the International Association of Universities, I want to affirm that the IAU stands with you. Your leadership, scholarly community, and students embody the very principles that form the backbone of higher education as a public good, a principle which we are committed to defending and advancing through our global network.

Please know that we are ready to support Ilia State University through international exchange, dialogue, and peer learning, and to amplify your voice within forums where higher education policy, autonomy, and academic freedom are discussed. The global higher education community is watching with great respect for how you confront these pressures with dignity and purpose.

With deep solidarity and respect,
Hilligje van't Land
Secretary General
International Association of Universities
