Scientific Conference „The Birth of Modern Georgia“
On October 10-12, Ilia Chavchavadze State University hosted an international scientific conference „The Birth of Modern Georgia: the First Georgian Republic and its Successors 1918-2008."
Opening celebration was held at the Parliament of Georgia. It was followed by scientific part which took place at the Ilia Chavchavadze State University.
Management of the conference was carried out by a group of local and internatioinal academicians and scientists, who consider political and civil processes of that time important. Support for the event was provided by: Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies (GFSIS), Georgian Association in the U.S., Government of Georgia, Embassy of the Great Britain in Georgia, Friedrich Ebert Foundation. During the conference participants discussed different stages of development of modern Georgia. The main topic was "Comparative analysis of similarities and differences of modern Georgian government (Gamsakhurdia, Shevardnadze, Saakashvili) and the one of the First Georgian Republic in 1918-1921." Representatives of non-governmental sector and international organizations presented their papers. Academicians and politicians discussed the following topics: "Impact of August War on Georgia and Entire World," "Role of Geopolitics, Energy and Regional Power in Foreign Policy of Georgia," "Role of Europe in Georgia in 1921-2009."
The First Republic and modern Georgia are linked to each other by history, culture and geography. There are significant continuations, parallels and differencies which have to be investigated by representatives and experts from academic fields in order to make less known periods of Georgian history accessible for Georgian society. This was one of the main goals of the international scentific conference which was organised thanks to initiative and support of the Ilia Chavchacadze State University, Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili State University and Rustaveli Foundation.
