News

Researchers at the Institute of Ecology of Ilia State University, Giorgi Chaladze, Levan Kalatozishvili, Zurab Janiashvili and Giorgi Bakuradze have discovered a new species of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in the village of Khevshashi (Eastern Georgia).

The new species of ground beetles belongs to the subgenus Aphaonus Reitter (genus Pterostichus), which has been known in Georgia only in the region of Abkhazia. The beetles have been named Pterostichus neilgaimani, in honor of Neil Gaiman, author of science fiction short stories, novels, comic books and films.

Pterostichus neilgaimani is extremely rare, lives in the ground and is a predator like Aphaonus.

The work was published in the popular science journal called “Zootaxa”.
