ILIA STATE UNIVERSITY RETAINS TOP SPOT THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY IN THE TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS

Ilia State University’s success in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings reaffirms its strong position and vision, particularly in the areas of research quality and internationalization, which remain the institution's top priorities.

For the 2025 THE ranking, Elsevier, the bibliometric data provider, analyzed more than 18 million publications and over 157 million citations from academic journals indexed in the Scopus database using an updated methodology. A total of 2,092 universities were included in the 2025 ranking, 185 more than the previous year.

Research plays a significant role in Times Higher Education's ranking methodology, with the research environment and its quality accounting for 59% of the overall score. The methodology is based on 18 indicators grouped into five weighted categories:

  • Teaching (29.5%): learning environment;
  • Research environment (29%): volume, income, and reputation;
  • Research quality (30%): citation impact, research strength, excellence, and influence;
  • Link with the industry (4%):  Industry income and patents;
  • International outlook (7.5%): international staff, students, and research collaboration;

The research environment and its quality are the critical factors used to evaluate a university's role in creating a learning atmosphere, disseminating new knowledge and ideas, and contributing to the advancement of science globally.

Ilia State University's progress in the research category is noteworthy. Its score increased from 34.6 in 2022 to 49.6 in 2024 (see chart), placing Ilia State University alongside renowned institutions such as the University of Tsukuba (Japan) and Graz University of Technology (Austria).

 

Since 2022, the university's international outlook indicator has significantly improved, driven by the development and support of international programs. Currently, Ilia State University offers joint and double degree programs at all three levels of education and collaborates with renowned European universities to award joint or double degrees in twelve fields. The university is also actively developing exchange programs and accredited short-term study abroad opportunities for students from other countries.

In the 2022 THE ranking, Iliauni's international outlook score increased from 48.42 to 52.4 this year, placing it alongside prestigious institutions like the ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon (Portugal) and the University of Rhode Island (USA).
