The team members of the Alpine Ecosystems Research Program at the Institute of Ecology of Ilia State University (Jana Ekhvaia, Tamar Jolokhava, Arsen Bakhia, Otar Abdaladze) have published a scientific article ("Leaf Shape and size variability of Dryas octopetala in the Central Great Caucasus (the Kazbegi region, Georgia)" in the international peer-reviewed journal, Botanica Serbica.
The paper examines the inter-population diversity of leaf shape and size in the evergreen semi-shrub Dryas octopetala, focusing on soil pH gradients and employing both traditional and modern geometric morphometry methods.
This innovative research, conducted by researchers at Ilia State University, applies modern geometric morphometry – specifically the landmarks method - for the first time in the ecological analysis of plants in the Caucasus region and the post-Soviet space.
