Annotation
The history of monetary circulation in Southeast Asia, and in the Malay world in particular, The Islamization of the Malay world marked the beginning of a “golden age” of monetary and fiscal development. Between the thirteenth and nineteenth centuries, the scope of money expanded beyond commerce to taxation, tribute, and credit, linking local economies to wider transregional networks. Malay Muslim historiography of this period provides valuable insights into monetary practices and their integration into broader political, religious, and economic narratives. Consequently, historical Malay chronicles represent a crucial primary source for reconstructing the financial history of the region within both Islamic and global contexts.
