Eva Orthmann’s lecture “Friedrich Carl Andreas”

Events

Professor Eva Orthmann, director of the Institute of Iranian Studies at the University of Göttingen, will deliver a lecture, “Friedrich Carl Andreas,” within the permanent seminar of the G. Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies in the 201/202 meeting hall of Building S of Ilia State University on October 20.

Annotation

Friedrich Carl Andreas is the founder of Iranian Studies in Göttingen. He was a scholar of amazing language skills: besides many Iranian languages, he also knew Sanskrit, Latin, Greek, Turkish, Norwegian, Danish, etc. As a young scholar, he spent many years in Iran, first on an expedition and later on his own, in precarious circumstances. After his return to Germany, he married Lou Salomé, a famous writer and intellectual, who was the companion of several important thinkers. After World War I, Andreas was involved in interviews with Indian prisoners of war, who were used to document their languages.

The talk would introduce the intellectual career of Andreas, and discuss the topic of prisoners of war.
