“Cities of Kartli in the Roman Imperial Period and Late Antiquity” is the winning project of the 2021 competition of publishing grants sponsored by the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia.

About the book

During the Roman Imperial period and late antiquity, certain social, religious, civil and governance structures were created and developed in Kartli as a result of the relationship with the Roman Empire. Urbanization processes were underway in the country, new urban centers appeared.

There is a lack of studies on the issues of the urbanization of Kartli both in Georgian and foreign archaeological and historical literature. These issues are discussed in the book on the examples of the main cities of Kartli - Armazi and Mtskheta. Based on the archaeological and topographical data and the comparative analysis of Roman and Georgian written sources, the processes of structural and territorial development of the cities and the Roman influence reflected on them have been identified.
