Objectives

The programme aims to produce competitive and qualified lawyers with systemic knowledge in criminal law, including court procedures, European and international criminal law, as well as criminal law institutions, and practical skills and the ability to identify existing legal issue in the field of criminal law, ability to study, analyze and solve them.

Brief Description

The Master Programme in Criminal Law focuses on helping students to thoroughly study existing issues in criminal law. For this purpose, the Master Programme offers students the course for studying court procedures within common courts and, most importantly, the Supreme Court of Georgia. The course for substantiating adjudications in criminal law cases enabling students to get familiarized with the “types” of adjudications, components required for its substantiation and stylistic clarity is particularly important. For the purposes of achieving the objectives of Criminal Law Master Programme, international criminal law, European criminal law and Comparative Criminal Law courses is particularly important. These courses will enable students to be introduced to international instruments for protecting human rights in the field of criminal law (including principal decisions by European Court of Human Rights), as well as the EU criminal justice systems and the systems of different countries.

The Programme also comprises the course for substantiation of application of punitive measures in criminal law cases.

In addition, the Programme includes the course in relation to legal and political aspects of terrorism in consideration of modern challenges, as well the course with regard to practical issues in terms of the objectives of penalties and their imposition. At the same time, the Master Programme of Criminal Law is focused on development of practical skills to assist students. Accordingly, courses on practical activities by the parties to the criminal procedures are also available. The programme also enables students to study court actions against minors and problematic and comparative legal aspects in jury trial.
